I still remember what it felt like when everything clicked into place — teaching piano from home, my daughter napping while I prepped lessons, my husband walking in at 3:30 so I could spend the next few hours with my students. It was a good life. A full one.
And then my daughter started first grade, and the whole thing fell apart.
Suddenly those after-school hours, the ones I’d always filled with students, were the only hours I had with her. By the time the last lesson ended and the last invoice got sent, she was already getting ready for bed. I kept thinking: something has to change.
Around that same time, our family grew when we welcomed our son through adoption. He came with his own beautiful, complicated needs — appointments, therapies, an unpredictable rhythm that didn’t fit neatly into a studio schedule. I realized I couldn’t keep running 40 private students out of my home and also be the mom my kids needed me to be.
So I started building something different. Late at night, after the kids were asleep, I’d stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning piecing together a new kind of piano program — one that didn’t require families to rearrange their lives, fight traffic, or squeeze lessons into a tiny window after school. One that worked with the chaos of family life instead of against it.
That’s how Busy Moms Do Piano was born in 2016, and Busy Kids Do Piano followed soon after.
I’m Carly Seifert, and I’ve been teaching piano for over 22 years — in home studios, classrooms, and settings serving kids with special needs. I’m also a trained and certified Music for Young Children teacher, which completely changed how I think about music education. Learning piano should involve discipline, yes, but it should also be joyful, relational, and flexible enough to meet kids where they actually are.
Today, Busy Kids Do Piano is an online membership program for families who want to give their children a real musical foundation — without the rigid scheduling, the expensive private lessons, or the guilt of having to cancel because life got in the way. You can learn more and explore membership options at busykidsdopiano.com/membership.
If you’re a mom who’s also dreaming of learning piano yourself, Busy Moms Do Piano was made for you too.
I’m so glad you’re here. I’m cheering you on.
Carly
