The Nutcracker might be the most famous ballet out there, and this time of year, chances are you’re hearing bits of it everywhere — the grocery store, the mall, maybe even your own living room. In Episode 9, I wanted to slow down and actually tell the story behind all those familiar melodies, so this one’s a storytelling episode.
What You’ll Hear
We follow Clara on her journey into the Land of Sweets, with the Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy along the way — and I’ve woven in excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s score as we go, so the music becomes part of the story instead of just background noise. You’ll hear the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” the “Waltz of the Flowers,” and a few other favorites, each one showing up right where it belongs in the story.
My hope is that by the end, your kids won’t just recognize these tunes — they’ll know why the music sounds the way it does at each part of the story (why the Sugar Plum Fairy’s music feels light and sparkly, why the snowflakes’ music feels swirly and cold). That’s always been the goal with Busy Kids Love Music: make classical music feel like something kids can actually understand and love, not just something that plays in the background of a holiday commercial.
Try This at Home
After you listen, ask your kids to pick their favorite musical moment from the story and tell you why. Was it the snow scene? The Sugar Plum Fairy? There’s no wrong answer — I just love hearing what catches a kid’s ear.
